This romantic verse of the exploits of Don Roderick-"the last king of the Visi-Goths"-written in Popean rhyming couplets, was the only book Beach published. Two years before Pelayo, however, she wrote the lyrics to a song commemorating the exploits of the frigate Cumberland during the battle of Hampton Roads. Her song-"The Last Broadside"-was called "the best lyric our War has produced" by William Cullen Bryant.
