Barton, Clara. Printed document, signed "Clara Barton," July 29, [1865].
A single 8vo. leaf, printed; "Office of Correspondence with the friends of the Missing Men of the United States Army" letterhead. Framed.
An interesting example of an official condolence letter sent to a grieving Union family by Clara Barton, then an official with the Union Army; hand-dated by Barton, with her autograph signature on the last line and other occasional bits of information entered by her throughout.
In this document-signed by Barton shortly after the cessation of the Civil War-she responds to a mother who has inquired about her son, a Union soldier still unaccounted for. It reads in part: "Dear Madam: Your communication of July 23 is received, and the name of James R. Hussey...will be placed upon my rolls...Please be assured that as soon as any information of interest to yourself is gained, it will be most promptly and cheerfully forwarded to you. Very sincerely yours, Clara Barton."
