WOMEN'S BASEBALL IN NEW YORK
[Athletics] [Scorecard]: New York Bloomer Girls, Inc. Margaret R. Nebel, Mgr. Stapleton, Staten
Island, N.Y.: New York Bloomer Girls, Inc., ca. 1919.
Printed scorecard, 5 ½ x 4 ½ inches; photographic recto, printed verso.
A postcard-size scorecard bearing a photograph of the team on the recto, and a scorecard on the
verso with the Bloomers' players names pre-printed and a place to insert the names of the "Home
Team."
Billed as the "Undefeated Female Baseball Champions of the East since 1910," of the numerous
barnstorming Bloomer Girl baseball teams of the 1910s and '20s, the New York Bloomer Girls
under Margaret Nabel were considered one of the strongest. Nabel dispensed with the tradition of
using a man to pitch and a man to catch, and her all-girl teams (which here include such members
as pitcher Helen Demerest and "Hack" McCuttun at third) drew in part on the deep local pool of
baseball talent on Staten Island. Nabel's team apparently folded sometime between 1933 and
1935.
